Основной сюжет – борьба Добра и Зла, чистоты и греха. Герой произведения И.С. Шмелева, пятнадцатилетний гимназист, «бедный рыцарь», вступает в эту борьбу. Он искренно любит свою сверстницу, домработницу Пашу, и в тоже время тайно вздыхает о красавице-соседке. Разыгрывается драма с неожиданной развязкой.
