Роман о Батые остается одним из самых популярных исторических романов в нашей литературе. Живое и яркое описание событий первой трети XIII века, которые разворачиваются на просторах азиатских степей и в глуши русских лесов, их историческая достоверность невольно захватывают читателя. Прежде чем встать во главе бесчисленного монгольского войска, внук Чингиз Хана, Бату скитается, скрываясь от наемных убийц, подсылаемых другими претендентами на верховную власть. Но и в своем бегстве он проявляет свои исключительные качества умного, беспощадного и уверенного в своей путеводной звезде воина. Пройдя через опасности и превратности судьбы, он сам становится грозой для других и по завету своего великого деда решает покорить запад. Первой на пути завоевателя оказывается Рязань. Она долго и мужественно сопротивляется, но не получив помощи от других русских земель, падает под копытами монгольских коней. Стремительно, не дав опомниться сопредельным княжествам, хан Бату движется на Коломну. Та же участь постигает вскоре Москву и Владимир. И все же отвага не оставляет русских князей, они тайно от врага приступают к сбору общего русского войска, которое должно сокрушить монголов.
