Первая сюита открывается «Прелюдией», в которой противопоставлены картины брызжущей весельем народной жизни и две индивидуальные характеристики — Жаннэ и Фредери. В начале использован подлинный древний напев — ноэль (рождественская песнь), заимствованный из «Собрания провансальских и французских духовных напевов» — «Марш трех королей». В унисонном звучании низких деревянных инструментов, двух валторн и струнных он вступает торжественно, но не грузно, открывая действие драмы (в музыке к «Арлезианке» это увертюра). Тема проводится несколько раз, играя разными оркестровыми красками, затем ее сменяет мягко-певучая мелодия, интонируемая редко используемым в симфоническом оркестре саксофоном, — это лейтмотив Жаннэ. Он подготавливает появление темы Фредери — страстно экспрессивной, исполненной душевной боли. Композитор предельно выразительно использует самые скупые средства: тему Фредери первоначально исполняют в октаву две первых скрипки и два альта на фоне тремоло двух скрипок и двух виолончелей и долгих выдержанных звуков у деревянных духовых. Постепенно звучание разрастается, доходя до полнозвучного tutti. Заключительные аккорды замирают на легчайшем пианиссимо.
The first suite opens with a “Prelude”, in which the paintings are contrasted with the splashing fun of people's life and two individual characteristics - Jeanne and Frederi. In the beginning, an authentic ancient tune — Noel (Christmas carol), borrowed from the “Collection of Provencal and French Spiritual Tunes” - “March of the Three Kings” - was used. In the unison sound of low wooden instruments, two French horns and strings, he enters solemnly, but not heavily, revealing the action of the drama (in the music for Arlesianke, this is an overture). The theme is held several times, playing with different orchestral colors, then it is replaced by a softly singing melody, intonated by a saxophone rarely used in a symphony orchestra - this is Jeanne's leitmotif. He prepares the appearance of Fredery's theme - passionately expressive, full of heartache. The composer uses the strongest means most expressively: Fredery's theme is initially performed in octave by the first two violins and two violas against the background of a tremolo of two violins and two cellos and long sustained sounds from the woodwind. Gradually, the sound grows, reaching the full-sounding tutti. The final chords freeze at the easiest pianissimo.
