Планомерные раскопки начались с 30-х годов XIX века. В 1830 году были проведены раскопки знаменитого кургана Куль-Оба (Холм праха), в котором было найдено большое количество скифских золотых украшений. Раскопки велись под руководством Поля Дюбрюкса. Его личная коллекция стала основой открытого в 1826 году музея. В фондах музея хранится более 130 тыс. музейных предметов. Коллекция музея каждый год продолжает пополняться за счёт новых находок. В настоящее время раскопки на античных городищах ведут учёные из России, с Украины и из Польши.
