Прав. Филарет Милостивый жил в обл. Пафлагония, на севере Малой Азии, в VIII в. Семья его принадлежала к знати. Но богатство не затмило глаза Филарету. Он близко к сердцу принял слова Спасителя о том, что богатому трудно попасть в Царствие Небесное. С тех пор главным его попечением стала забота о бедных. Филарет кормил нищих, помогал вдовам и сиротам. Долгое время жена и дети с насмешками и упреками относились к отцу. Ведь даже последнее оставшееся имущество после набега арабов он раздал тем, у кого ничего не осталось. «Я имею в тайниках, вам неизвестных такое богатство и такие сокровища, которых достанет вам, даже если вы и сто лет проживете без труда и ни о чем не заботясь», − отвечал Филарет родным. И Господь воздал Филарету, вернув ему богатство. После смерти Филарета его жена, Феозва, увидела, сколько людей пришло помянуть добрым словом ее супруга. Тогда и она стала восстанавливать в Пафлагонии монастыри и храмы, разрушенные во время иноземных нашествий.
