Григорианский хорал - общее наименование песнопений церковной католической музыки. Г. х. сложился в результате отбора и переработки католической церковью местных христианской песнопений. Упорядочение молитв, текстов было начато при папе Григории I, прозванном Великим (умер в 604 г.). Канонизация напевов и текстов и строгое распределение их по датам церковного года были завершены к концу 7 в. Через 300 лет после смерти Григория I католический хоралам присвоили его имя [григорианское, или (от лат. Gregorius) грегорианское, пение]. Церковь стремилась придать песнопениям характер отрешённости от всего земного, мистического созерцания, религиозного экстаза. Вместе с тем песнопения обобщили многовековой опыт развития музыкальной культуры, впитали художественно ценные элементы песенности различных народов. Г. х. исполнялся певцами (мужской хор в унисон). Тексты Г. х. — главным образом прозаические, заимствованы из Библии, мелодии построены на т. н. средневековых ладах. Преобладали звуки равной длительности (отсюда позднейшее наименование Г. х. — кантус плапус, т. е. плавное пение). С усвоением церковного музыкой многоголосия Г. х. остался тематической основой (кантус фирмус) полифонических культовых произведений.
