Тульский край с давних пор был вотчиной славянского племени вятичи. В средние века эти земли вошли в состав Черниговского княжества, позже их завоевали рязанские князья. Во время нашествия татар тульские земли стали ареной борьбы кочевников с воинами Московского княжества.
