«Туонельский лебедь» — самая короткая часть сюиты, занимающая всего 102 такта и написанная для камерного оркестра, отличается необычным, «темным» колоритом. Из медной группы исключены звонкие трубы, из деревянной — светло окрашенные флейты и кларнеты. Зато добавлен мрачный тембр бас-кларнета и причудливый — английского рожка: именно он солирует, олицетворяя лебедя Туонелы, поющего песню смерти. Приглушены струнные: с начала до конца они играют с сурдинами, разбитые на небольшие группы, в которых еще выделены солирующие инструменты. Необычен размер, также выдержанный на протяжении всей части, — 9/4. Английский рожок на фоне зыбких аккордов струнных запевает бесконечную мелодию удивительной красоты, ему отвечают виолончели и альт соло. Затем колорит немного светлеет; вступает арфа. Траурные аккорды медных инструментов и литавр открывают последний раздел, где трагической кульминацией звучит патетическая мелодия струнных, напоминающая старинную народную балладу. Ее повторяет английский рожок, тогда как аккомпанирующие струнные играют тремоло древком смычка, словно подчеркивая необычный облик потустороннего мира. И, как обычно в эпических жанрах, эту часть сюиты обрамляют звучавшие в ее начале аккорды струнных и замирающая фраза виолончели соло.
“The Swan of Tuonel” - the shortest part of the suite, which takes only 102 bars and was written for a chamber orchestra, is distinguished by an unusual, “dark” color. Voiced pipes are excluded from the copper group, and light-colored flutes and clarinets from the wooden one. But the gloomy timbre of the bass clarinet and the quaint one of the English horn were added: it was he who soloed, personifying Tuonela's swan singing the song of death. The strings are muffled: from the beginning to the end they play with mums, divided into small groups, in which solo instruments are still singled out. Unusual size, also sustained throughout the entire part, is 9/4. The English horn against the background of unsteady chords of strings sings the endless melody of amazing beauty, and the cello and alto solo answer it. Then the coloring brightens a bit; enters the harp. Mourning chords of copper instruments and timpani open the last section, where the pathetic melody of strings sounds like a tragic climax, resembling an old folk ballad. The English horn repeats it, while the accompanying strings play a tremolo with a bow shaft, as if emphasizing the unusual appearance of the other world. And, as usual in the epic genres, this part of the suite is framed by string chords at its beginning and the transient phrase of a cello solo.
