The daughter of jazz guitarist Wylie Thompson. She was privately studying piano and already at an early age she performed in public concerts. She continued her music education in college, then at the University of Wayne. In 1952 she decided to elect her harp as her main instrument, in November 1953 she received her first engagement as a harpist in one of the jazz clubs of Philadelphia. Collaborated in 1957 with Louis Armstrong and Woody Herman, regularly performed as a soloist in New York and Detroit. She directed the trio and the quartet in 1957-65 (Frank Wess, Gene Wright, Art Taylor, Roy Haines, Jimmy Cobb, Richard Davis and other famous jazzmen played in these combos). Ashby also worked extensively on television, organized a series of discussions about radio jazz in Detroit (in the early 1960s and mid-1970s). Actively engaged in teaching activities.
