The text of the song was written around 1920 by students from the Union of Youth (German Bündische Jugend) on the motives of the poem written in 1885 by General Heinrich von Reder "I am poor Kunrad" (German Ich bin der arme Kunrad). The author of the melody is Fritz Sotke (1919). The text of the song reflected the behavior of a peasant in the XVI century: in particular, aggressive cries of the church and feudal lords. There were 13 stanzas in the song: after each stanza the refrain was repeated. Before the Second World War, the song was used actively by the Nazis in the struggle against the Catholic Church, and was also one of the official songs of the SS. During the Second World War, the song actually became the official march of the 8th Cavalry Division of the SS "Florian Gaier". Until 1956 the song was one of the marches of the National People's Army of the GDR. Later, it was often performed in a reduced or slightly modified form.
