Glazunov’s Concerto, which dates from 1904, is almost the last of the great Romantic violin concertos. There the violin is called upon in the first movement to express a heartfelt melancholy with an almost vocal intensity, while the sparkling last movement calls for a bravura technique. The concerto divides into two sections, but with two parts to the first, there are effectively three movements.The soloist is almost never silent, and sets the overall tone, in the first two movements, of yearning lyricism. After a long solo cadenza the work closes with a cheerful rondo finale
