Прп. Варлаам родился в знатной новгородской семье. В юности принял монашество и поселился близ Новгорода, в урочище, называвшемся Хутынь. Вел уединенную суровую жизнь, соблюдал строгий пост, много трудился и непрестанно совершал молитвы. К нему начали приходить новгородцы, желавшие разделить труды и подвиги преподобного. Вскоре была построена церковь Преображения Господня и основан монастырь. Для служения ближним прп. Варлааму был послан дар прозорливости и чудотворений.
