Рассказ представляет собой воспоминание-размышление о детстве и его особом мире. Ребёнок видит всё вокруг в совершенно другом свете, нежели взрослые, подмечает красоту мира, чувствует тайные движения в нём, находя их в дальнем ударе вбиваемых свай. Мир взрослых представлен жестоким и омерзительным, наполненным ложными кумирами и целями и в то же время отчаянно неотвратимым. Душа ребёнка, видящая мир таким, каким он есть, обречена закостенеть, ведь герой - и этот вывод читатель может сделать лишь к концу повествования - всю жизнь провёл в тюрьме где-то на Севере СССР.
