У истоков ее создания - послушание, наложенное более ста лет назад одним из старцев Саввинского монастыря на молодого иеромонаха Феофана, пребывавшего в Иерусалиме в составе первой Русской Духовной миссии. Убеленный сединами старец подарил посланцу далекой России большой Патерик и велел перевести его. Этот самоотверженный труд сыграл свою роль в формировании личности иеромонаха - будущего святителя Феофана Затворника, выдающегося аскета и богослова.
ПАТЕРИК, с греческого πατερικόν (Paterikon) - сборник, отеческая книга (отечник).
Представляет собой сборник, содержащий жития и изречения, нравоучения святых отцов, монахов какого-л. одного монастыря. По церковному уставу читается между службами, особенно за трапезой в монастырях.
Литература патериков развивалась в IV-V вв., а их создание продолжалось вплоть до XX века.
Это сочинения, чрезвычайно популярные в византийской литературе и в христианской книжности в целом: известны переводы патериков на латинский, сирийский, коптский, грузинский, армянский и др. языки.
