Ихарев, явившийся в городском трактире, дотошно расспрашивает трактирного слугу Алексея о постояльцах: кто таковы, играют ли, только ли между собой и где берут карты; щедро вознаграждает понятливость его и отправляется в общую залу свести знакомство. Появляются Кругель и Швохнев и дознаются у Гаврюшки, слуги приезжего, откуда барин, играет ли и в выигрыше ли теперь. Узнав, что Ихарев выиграл недавно восемьдесят тысяч, подозревают в нем шулера и интересуются, что делает барин, оставаясь один. «Он уж барин, так держит себя хорошо: он ничего не делает», — следует ответ. Вознаграждён и Гаврюшка. Ихарев даёт Алексею дюжину карточных колод с тем, чтоб тот подложил их во время игры…
