Великий Анри Бергсон, особенно выделявший эту вещь в творчестве Моруа, даже назвал ее философской сказкой. Но, как обычно у Моруа, в ней просматриваются автобиографические мотивы. Как и рассказчик, он служил в британском экспедиционном корпусе, и портреты женщины почти ангельской красоты он явно писал со своей первой жены. Однако и эти мотивы, и всякий иной жизненный опыт, и мысль, и фантазия - только генетический материал,
из которого в душе писателя взрастает вечная соперница и наследница жизни - мечта любви. О ней и эта повесть.
