Лугин считает себя повидавшим жизнь человеком. Ничто ему не интересно, кругом тоска. Однажды на аристократическом приёме он признаётся хозяйке, что начинает сходить с ума. Чудится голос, твердящий о неком доме в Столярном переулке у Кокушкиного моста. Повинуясь голосу, с трудом отыскав бывшие квартиры титулярного советника Штосса, Лугин поселяется в них. Его внимание привлекает висящий на стене портрет старика. Неожиданно выясняется, что ночью старик оживает и совсем не прочь перекинуться в карты...
