В “Дуэли” нет реального общего дела или общей ценности, с которой были бы соотнесены все персоналии. Чехов изображает случайную группу людей, объединенных только временем и пространством. Никакие прочные связи не объединяют их. Это частное бытие в его наиболее чистой форме. Судьба одних никак, в сущности, не затрагивает остальных. Герои разобщены и потому центральные события не связывают и не исчерпывают их. Единство повести основывается не на событиях, а на универсальных свойствах изображаемого мира. Каждый герой порознь, частным образом, преследуя свои личные цели, сталкивается с трудностями, общими для всех. Каждый должен победить в одиночку. И неважно, из какой среды герой, каковы его профессия, образование, уровень развития; независимо от всего этого он обязательно столкнется с определенными общественными трудностями. В повести поставлено несколько проблем, и каждая из них освещается итоговой мыслью и разрешается только в ее свете. “Спасение надо искать только в себе самом...” - и эта мысль обосновывается последними словами Лаевского. Человеку только самому доступно понимание наиболее скрытных его свойств и душевных качеств. В “Дуэли” показано множество ошибок и недоразумений, которые возникают или из-за непонимания своего ближнего, или из-за неполного знания о нем.
There is no real common cause or common value in the “Duel” with which all personalities would be related. Chekhov depicts a random group of people united only by time and space. No strong ties unite them. This is a private being in its purest form. The fate of some does not, in essence, affect the rest. The heroes are divided and therefore the central events do not bind and do not exhaust them. The unity of the story is not based on events, but on the universal properties of the depicted world. Each hero separately, in private, pursuing his personal goals, is faced with difficulties common to all. Everyone must win alone. And it doesn’t matter from which environment the hero is, what his profession, education, level of development are; regardless of all this, he will certainly encounter certain social difficulties. Several problems are posed in the story, and each of them is illuminated by a final thought and is resolved only in its light. “Salvation must be sought only in oneself ...” - and this idea is justified by the last words of Laevsky. An understanding of his most secretive properties and spiritual qualities is accessible only to man himself. The “Duel” shows a lot of mistakes and misunderstandings that arise either due to a misunderstanding of one's neighbor, or due to an incomplete knowledge of him.
