В действительности таинственный граф считается реально существующей личностью: настоящее его имя – Жозеф Бальзамо.
Он родился в семье мелкого торговца сукном Пьетро Бальзамо и Феличии Браконьери.
В детстве будущий алхимик был непоседлив и склонен к авантюрам, и больше интересовался фокусами и чревовещанием, чем науками. Из школы при церкви святого Рокка его выгнали за богохульство (второй вариант: за кражу). Для перевоспитания мать отправила его в монастырь бенедиктинцев.
Один из монахов, аптекарь, сведущий в химии и медицине, заметив склонность Калиостро к химическим исследованиям, взял его к себе в ученики. Но обучение длилось недолго – Бальзамо уличили в мошенничестве и изгнали из монастыря.
Впрочем, сам он утверждал, что долго изучал в монастырской библиотеке древние книги по химии, лекарственным травам и астрономии. Вернувшись в Палермо, Джузеппе занялся изготовлением «чудодейственных» снадобий, подделкой документов и продажей простакам якобы старинных карт с указанными на них местами, где спрятаны клады.
В Париже, куда он перебрался из Лондона, Калиостро столкнулся с конкурентом – графом Сен-Жерменом. Калиостро позаимствовал у него несколько приемов, один из них – он заставлял своих слуг говорить любопытным, что они служат своему господину уже триста лет, и за это время тот ничуть не изменился.
По другим данным, дворецкий отвечал, что поступил на службу к графу в год убийства Юлия Цезаря. Сохранилась копия записки Калиостро, в ней даётся описание процесса «регенерации», или возвращения молодости.

In fact, the mysterious count is considered a real person: his real name is Joseph Balsamo.
He was born into the family of a small cloth merchant Pietro Balsamo and Felicia Poacheri.
As a child, the future alchemist was restless and inclined to adventures, and was more interested in tricks and ventriloquism than sciences. He was expelled from the school at the Church of St. Rocca for blasphemy (the second option: for theft). For re-education, his mother sent him to a Benedictine monastery.
One of the monks, a pharmacist, versed in chemistry and medicine, noticing Cagliostro's penchant for chemical research, took him to his apprentice. But the training did not last long - Balsamo was convicted of fraud and expelled from the monastery.
However, he himself claimed that he had been studying ancient books on chemistry, medicinal herbs and astronomy in the monastery library for a long time. Returning to Palermo, Giuseppe started making "miraculous" drugs, forging documents and selling to simpletons supposedly old maps with the places where the treasures were hidden.
In Paris, where he moved from London, Cagliostro ran into a rival - the Count Saint-Germain. Cagliostro borrowed several tricks from him, one of them - he made his servants tell the curious that they had been serving their master for three hundred years, and during this time he did not change at all.
