1. Lento, Poco rubato

Karin Dornbusch,

Sonata for clarinet solo (1972)
1. Lento, Poco rubato

Karin Dornbusch, clarinet
_____________________
In this work there is a type of two-part, which was later reproduced in a number of other works.
- What is the peculiarity of this type of two-part?
- The idea is that both parts of such a diptych are built on the same material.

Part 1 is a kind of introduction. The character is purely improvised, but not ad libitum, but by the nature of the material itself, its pitch and rhythmic presentation: there are no bar lines, there is not the slightest element of rhythmic ostenata, nowhere even two sixteenth or two eighths in a row - the fabric is continuously and freely changing; and because the rhythmic structures are very complex, there is a feeling of real free improvisation on the clarinet.
- The Sonata begins, as is your custom, again with a re note.
- Unfortunately, from her.
In fact, the entire range of the clarinet is actively being developed already in the 1st part. The development is directed from the bottom up to the climax, which is made in the highest register, which seems to be painfully tense for the clarinet, and then everything goes down and ends with the lowest clarinet note - again, the re note.

And the 2nd part is completely opposite to the first one - it is both the scherzo and the final, that is, it is the real center of the whole cycle. The basis here is the principle of continuous variation: the fabric is constantly changing, the meter also changes frequently and the rhythmic grids are very complex all the time. But at the same time, this variation is opposed by a special force - this is the A-flat note of the first octave, which literally gets stuck from the very beginning of the 2nd part and then constantly tries to pause and slow down the general movement - as a result, you have the feeling that the composition is playing 2 musicians - two clarinets, not one. There is a struggle between two structures: one - only renewal all the time, the fabric is continuous, nothing returns in it; the other is an ostinato all the time, which tends to occupy a bigger and bigger place in music. And each structure has its climaxes - zones of ultimate freedom, zones of free improvisational-dot writing - this is the “first” clarinet, and frozen zones in A-flat, which often repeats, remains in place all the time, but repeats itself in very different rhythms, and somewhere at the limit of its repetitions, it seems to be mirrored in the note of the salt of a small octave.
- When listening to the 2nd part, I often had the feeling of some very funny joke game.
- And well, that arose. I have relatively rare in music what is sometimes called humor. But in this part there is also a smile, in my opinion, and humor is all there is.
- The work is performed now?
- Lots of. I have not seen a single clarinet player, who would not play this Sonata.
- How would you like to see the nature of the performance of this work?
- Firstly, there should be an underlined big contrast between the 1st and 2nd parts. The 2nd part should be played rhythmically perfectly accurately. Everything should be like a stretched, strongly stretched spring: if this “spring tension” falls, then the whole part is lost. Therefore, the choice of pace is no less important. I really do not like to put a metronome, because it limits the artist and does not allow him to go his own way in the interpretation of character. But here the pace must be chosen precisely in such a way that this part "does not sit on the ground" - it must "fly all" on continuous staccato and not even staccato, staccatissimo - "sharp injections with an unusually sharp needle."

And it is in this that you will find a lot of connections, similar to the Sonata for the saxophone and piano. There is a less important similarity - this is work with quarter-tones in 2 parts of each of these compositions.
- And yet, what is the most important thing for you in the performance?
- Character! The pace may vary somewhat, but if the person did not guess the character, that is, everything that is all together in the composition, then the whole play “falls”.
