ГЛАВА 17.
1Лучше кусок сухого хлеба, и с ним мир, нежели дом, полный заколотого скота, с раздором.
2Разумный раб господствует над беспутным сыном и между братьями разделит наследство.
3Плавильня - для серебра, и горнило - для золота, а сердца испытывает Господь.
4Злодей внимает устам беззаконным, лжец слушается языка пагубного.
5Кто ругается над нищим, тот хулит Творца его; кто радуется несчастью, тот не останется ненаказанным [а милосердый помилован будет].
6Венец стариков - сыновья сыновей, и слава детей - родители их. [У верного целый мир богатства, а у неверного - ни обола.]
7Неприлична глупому важная речь, тем паче знатному - уста лживые.
8Подарок - драгоценный камень в глазах владеющего им: куда ни обратится он, успеет.
9Прикрывающий проступок ищет любви; а кто снова напоминает о нем, тот удаляет друга.
10На разумного сильнее действует выговор, нежели на глупого сто ударов.
11Возмутитель ищет только зла; поэтому жестокий ангел будет послан против него.
12Лучше встретить человеку медведицу, лишенную детей, нежели глупца с его глупостью.
13Кто за добро воздает злом, от дома того не отойдет зло.
14Начало ссоры - как прорыв воды; оставь ссору прежде, нежели разгорелась она.
15Оправдывающий нечестивого и обвиняющий праведного - оба мерзость пред Господом.
16К чему сокровище в руках глупца? Для приобретения мудрости у него нет разума. [Кто высоким делает свой дом, тот ищет разбиться; а уклоняющийся от учения впадет в беды.]
17Друг любит во всякое время и, как брат, явится во время несчастья.
18Человек малоумный дает руку и ручается за ближнего своего.
19Кто любит ссоры, любит грех, и кто высоко поднимает ворота свои, тот ищет падения.
20Коварное сердце не найдет добра, и лукавый язык попадет в беду.
21Родил кто глупого,- себе на го'ре, и отец глупого не порадуется.
22Веселое сердце благотворно, как врачевство, а унылый дух сушит кости.
23Нечестивый берет подарок из пазухи, чтобы извратить пути правосудия.
24Мудрость - пред лицем у разумного, а глаза глупца - на конце земли.
25Глупый сын - досада отцу своему и огорчение для матери своей.
26Нехорошо и обвинять правого, и бить вельмож за правду.
27Разумный воздержан в словах своих, и благоразумный хладнокровен.
28И глупец, когда молчит, может показаться мудрым, и затворяющий уста свои - благоразумным.

CHAPTER 17.
1Better a piece of dry bread, and with it peace, than a house full of slaughtered cattle, with contention.
2 An intelligent servant dominates over the dissolute son and will divide the inheritance between the brothers.
The smelter is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests the hearts.
4The villain listens to the lips of the wicked; the liar listens to the language of the evil.
5Who swears at a beggar, he blasphemes his creator; he who rejoices in misfortune will not go unpunished [and the merciful will be pardoned].
6The old men are the sons of sons, and the glory of the children is their parents. [The faithful has a whole world of wealth, and the wrong has no obol.]
7 The important speech to the stupid is indecent, even more so to a nobleman - lying lips.
8Gift - a gem in the eyes of owning it: wherever he turns, he has time.
9The covering fault seeks love; and whoever reminds of him again, he removes a friend.
10On a reasonable one, a reprimand acts more strongly than a foolish one hundred punches.
11The intruder seeks only evil; therefore the cruel angel will be sent against him.
12It is better to meet a man a bear deprived of children than a fool with his stupidity.
13 Whoso does good for evil, evil shall not depart from that house.
14The beginning of a quarrel is like a breakthrough of water; leave the quarrel before it broke out.
15 He who justifies the ungodly and accuses the righteous is both an abomination to the Lord.
16 What is the treasure in the hands of a fool? To gain wisdom, he has no mind. [He who makes his house high, seeks to break; but he that shies away from doctrine will fall into trouble.]
17 A friend loves at all times and, like a brother, will appear at the time of adversity.
18The foolish man gives his hand and vouches for his neighbor.
19 Who loves quarrels, loves sin, and whoever lifts his gates high, he seeks to fall.
20 A curious heart will not find good, and a crafty tongue will be in trouble.
21 Who is the birth of a fool — himself in the go're, and the father of the fool will not rejoice.
22 A merry heart is beneficial as healing, and a dull spirit dries bones.
23 The wicked take a gift from his bosom to pervert the ways of justice.
24 Wisdom is before the face of the prudent, and the eyes of a fool is at the end of the earth.
25 A foolish son is a nuisance to his father, and a grief for his mother.
26 It is not good to accuse the right, and to beat the nobles for the truth.
27 Reasonable temperate in his words, and prudent composure.
28And a fool, when he is silent, may seem wise, and shutting his mouth - prudent.
